About this Channel

Operation Migration is a mission to save and increase the Whooping Crane population. Operation Migration has played a leading role in the reintroduction of endangered Whooping cranes into eastern North America since 2001. In the 1940s the species was reduced to just 15 birds. They are critically endangered and as there are so few left and they are concentrated in one place they are in even more danger.Operation Migration is training cranes born in captivity to migrate across America by using microlights. It is 1285 miles and covers seven states of America. They use four ultralight aircraft each weighing 365 pounds. There will be five pilots and altogether fourteen people in the migration team from the US and Canada. They will use the network of as many as 26 stop overs pre -established along the migration route Crane cam watches the pens where the recently arrived cohorts of young Whooping Cranes are being kept at each stop over.
